Following the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union, the UK is re-establishing a team of technical airworthiness specialists that will support its diverse certification and design activities, including those associated with commercial air transport, general aviation, unmanned air vehicles, space flight and innovation.


We’re rapidly expanding and looking for Design and Certification Specialists to join the team.


The Role

You will support the overall airworthiness capability business plan. In doing so you will contribute to the wider airworthiness team, specifically in establishing and delivering the UK’s ICAO State of Design responsibilities. 


You will work closely with the Design and Certification Manager and Principal Design and Certification Specialists and will work on certification projects, in-service performance and continued airworthiness of type products, across the many domains.


This is a dynamic and varied role that will involve initial airworthiness activities, review and approval of design changes, validation of other certifying authorities’ work as well as of Design Organisation oversight. You’ll work widely across industry as regulatory engagement will be required to ensure that the CAA keeps appraised of future projects, innovation technologies and proposed regulatory changes.


This is a dynamic and varied role that will include:

  • Certification of aircraft products, parts and appliances,
  • Validation of other certifying authorities’ work
  • Design Organisation oversight.
  • Supporting projects across a diverse spectrum of the aviation industry including, commercial air transport, general aviation, UAS, Innovation and Space Flight


You will also work to the CAA’s internal policies and procedures in your day to day role. Oversight of organisations therefore will be conducted in accordance with our Performance Based


Oversight business rules, based on complexity, risk and performance.


About You

You will hold an engineering degree or equivalent, or demonstrable industry experience.


You will be a specialist in your field with sound knowledge of the functioning and management of the aerospace industry, preferably gained by working in an aeronautically related engineering field.


Knowledge of certification in aerospace and a detailed knowledge of the functioning of regulation is needed. Specifically, you’ll hold knowledge of certification in one or more of the fields outlined below:


  • Structures/Materials
  • Electrical systems
  • Avionic systems
  • Cabin Safety / Environment Control Systems / Icing
  • General Airworthiness / Project Certification Management
  • Design assurance and safety assessment


You will be a confident decision maker and excellent communicator, with the ability to form sound judgments and conduct technical conversations, engaging at all levels.


You will be a self-starter, comfortable working under your own initiative and capable delivering on your workload/projects as assigned.

The role will see you operating widely with regular travel throughout the UK and Europe. You will also have regular opportunities to attend training programmes aimed at your continued growth and development.


Additional Information

For many appointments within the CAA, these roles require access to operationally sensitive infrastructure and/or Nationally Protected information. For these roles the post holders must undergo National Security Vetting and achieve the appropriate level of clearance.


To be vetted we will usually expect a reasonable period of residency in the UK so that meaningful checks can be undertaken. This can either be 3 years or 5 years depending on the level required (CTC or SC). If you do not meet these requirements, we may not be able to accept your application.
