The Role

 

Are you an aviation professional with extensive knowledge and experience in the safe transport of dangerous goods by air? If so, we could use your expertise to help us make this sector of the industry even safer. We are looking for a Flight Operations Lead to manage the dangerous goods team and associated activities within Flight Operations, which is an integral part of the established and world-renowned Safety & Airspace Regulation Group (SARG).

 

Your primary task will be to manage, train and mentor a team of inspectors tasked with verifying the safe transport of dangerous goods by commercial air transport and public transport operators. You will be required to allocate and prioritise tasks to achieve effective and efficient oversight of the dangerous goods transport chain, including operators, shippers, freight forwarders, ground handling agents, approved training providers and even innovative platforms such as remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS). On occasions, you will be required to support inspectors with these activities so will also undergo Flight Operations inspector theory and practical training.

 

You will also lead the delivery, development, and governance of dangerous goods activities, including the authoring of procedures, the implementation of performance-based regulation principles, the management of industry safety risks, collaborating with international stakeholders, and the use of management information to monitor the effectiveness of actions and decisions.

 

The role will require extensive communication with internal and external stakeholders, at all levels, who will be reliant on your expertise in dangerous goods.

 

About You

 

  • You will have extensive knowledge and experience relating to the transport of dangerous goods by air, either in an operational or regulatory environment
  • You will have extensive knowledge of the regulatory requirements relating to the transport of dangerous goods by air
  • You will have a strong understanding of the primary functions of the CAA and the role of Flight Operations
  • Experience of developing, delivering and/or assessing Category 6 dangerous goods training is highly desirable
  • Knowledge and experience of auditing processes relating to the transport of dangerous goods is required
  • You will have experience of team management and/or be able to demonstrate the key competencies required for this role
  • The ability to train, mentor and influence your team members will be crucial in achieving success in this role
  • You will have the ability to take the initiative in developing the dangerous goods activities, working under pressure and without direct supervision
  • You will have a keen eye for detail and be able to investigate and reach justified conclusions
  • This role requires strong interpersonal skills as you will communicate at all levels through the CAA and externally as you develop strong relationships
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are vital to ensure that clear messages are delivered to both internal and external stakeholders

Additional Information
 

For many appointments within the CAA, these roles require access to operationally sensitive infrastructure and/or Nationally Protected information. For these roles the post holders must undergo National Security Vetting and achieve the appropriate level of clearance.

 

To be vetted we will usually expect a reasonable period of residency in the UK so that meaningful checks can be undertaken.
