We are the UK's aviation regulator and recognised as a world leader in its field. Our activities are diverse, enabling the aviation industry to meet the highest safety standards, and we pride ourselves on our ability to adapt to the constantly evolving aviation environment.

The Role

Are you an aviation professional with knowledge and experience in the safe transport of dangerous goods by air? If so, we could use your expertise to help us make this sector of the industry even safer. We are looking for an Inspecting Officer to join our dangerous goods team and become part of the UK’s specialist aviation regulator, improving industry safety on behalf of the nation. You can help to ensure our industry continues to meet the highest standards.

We are expanding our influence to become a more effective regulator. The dangerous goods team works within Flight Operations, which is an integral part of the established and world-renowned Safety & Airspace Regulation Group (SARG) so your knowledge, skills and experience will contribute significantly to the oversight of flight operations UK-wide.

Your primary task will be to verify the safe transport of dangerous goods by commercial air transport and public transport operators through a programme of audits and inspections. You will monitor compliance with International and National safety regulations related to procedures for the carriage of dangerous goods, training of staff and effective risk management. You will be required to communicate findings to senior management and assess the effectiveness of the corrective and preventative actions provided to adequately eliminate the potential for future recurrence. Where required, you will conduct follow up audits to verify the effectiveness of corrective action taken by the operator.

You will also oversee other sectors of the dangerous goods transport chain such as shippers, freight forwarders and ground handling agents, as well as approved training providers and innovative platforms such as remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS).

About You

  • You will have extensive knowledge and experience relating to the transport of dangerous goods by air
  • You will have an understanding of the primary functions of the CAA and the role of Flight Operations
  • You will have a broad knowledge of the regulatory requirements relating to the transport of dangerous goods by air
  • Experience of developing and/or delivering Category 6 dangerous goods training is highly desirable
  • Knowledge and experience of auditing processes relating to the transport of dangerous goods is preferable
  • You will have a keen eye for detail and be able to investigate and reach justified conclusions
  • This role requires strong interpersonal skills as you will communicate at all levels through the CAA and externally as you develop strong relationships
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are vital to ensure that clear messages are delivered to both internal and external stakeholders
  • You will also have the ability to be flexible but influential when required

What Can We Offer You?

This is a highly responsible but rewarding role where you will collaborate widely and see your expertise have a real impact as you help build a safe industry. You will be joining a supportive team where on the job training will be provided to ensure that whatever your background, you will be capable of inspecting any operator in the UK and overseas.
