The Role

Data from 2019 shows that UK exports of aerospace products made up over 80% of the total UK aerospace market. UK aerospace manufacturers, operators and maintenance organisations are able to function more effectively, maintaining high levels of safety, through the development of international agreements, standards, and processes. The international agreements function of the CAA plays a pivotal role in crafting an environment that promotes international cooperation on safety matters. As well as this, it takes the lead in the creation of robust, easy to navigate arrangements and agreements that reduce bureaucracy and duplication of effort with the aim of supporting global trade.

 

As a Policy Specialist in this area it will be your responsibility to develop policy that both ensures the highest standards of aviation safety while also enabling the industry to thrive. Additionally, you will support colleagues in wider CAA and DfT with the aim of establishing robust and practical arrangements between the UK and other countries. This is achieved through negotiations in both national and international contexts. As well as this, you must consider how policy fits with relevant guidelines, such as Better Regulation and SMART principles.

 

This role’s focus on international safety agreements means that you will often partner with a wide variety of individuals. These include everything from nation states to other regulatory bodies. It is our goal in these discussions to develop as streamlined and collaborative a relationship as possible. To this end, you will have to deftly balance cultural sensitivity with the CAA / UK's strategic objectives. This may require in-depth analysis, negotiating tactics, mutual acceptance of each other’s positions as well as lateral thinking when problem solving.

About You

  • Proven experience in the development and negotiation of inter-company, cross industrial or international agreements
  • Some experience in the drafting and development of policy
  • Possess in-depth and broad knowledge of the aviation industry
  • Have an extensive understanding of global legislation, regulatory frameworks and concepts such as Performance Based Oversight, Risk Assessment, Safety Management Systems etc.
  • An excellent written and verbal communicator who is used to collaborating with governmental, industrial, and regulatory partners
