The Role
Airspace is a crucial part of the UK’s infrastructure. Upgrading airspace is essential to open up airspace for all users, including general aviation flyers and new types of aircraft, such as drones, to provide the opportunity for reducing noise and to improve capacity for the aviation industry to reduce traffic delays when the demand returns. Critically, the emissions savings modernisation can deliver are a key component of the UK’s commitment to reach net zero by 2050. 

 

The Department for Transport (DfT) and CAA are co-sponsors of airspace modernisation. The Airspace Modernisation Strategy (AMS) was originally published by the CAA in 2018 and is currently made up of 15 industry-led initiatives, all of which require clear governance and oversight, to ensure delivery on the overall strategic aims of modernisation. 

 

To this end, we are looking for an experienced project/programme governance professional to act as the Principal for this unique and seismic programme of work.

 

As the Principal, your main responsibility will be to ensure that oversight and reporting on all AMS initiatives are aligned to the governance structure, agreed processes and reporting methods. This will require you to integrate and influence the various industry delivery groups through the building of positive relationships, utilisation of programme governance insight, setting up new processes and procedures to support that, and effective leadership. 

 

To achieve the desired programme outcomes, you will have to walk with your industrial partners every step of the way. This includes everything from the oversight of the initial implementation and stakeholder engagement plans development,  to the tracking of the work schedules against the plan. This is vital in allowing you to proactively identify, track and raise any risks and cross-dependencies that may impact the AMS delivery. Your assessments will go to the very heart of Government and will be presented to the DfT regularly, and Secretary of State on an annual basis.

 

About You

  • Extensive Project/Programme Management experience, preferably in a customer facing PMO or Programme Governance context
  • Proven track record in building positive, long standing relationships with partners and customers
  • Possess a driven, delivery focussed demeanour
  • Excellent social, listening and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Experienced in the production of a wide array of reports with a tacit understanding of how to communicate highly sophisticated and technical subject matter to a wide audience, including to the general public
  • A formal Project Management certificate, e.g. PRINCE2, PMP, PMBOK, PMI, P3O, PMQ etc
