The Department

The structure of the UK’s airspace has remained the same for decades, despite an increase in demand from its users. Our Airspace Modernisation Strategy sets out a new shared objective between the CAA and the Department for Transport (DfT) for modernising airspace which is to deliver quicker, quieter and cleaner journeys and more capacity for the benefit of those who use and are affected by UK airspace.


Representing the Safety and Airspace Regulation Group, the CAA is seeking a Principal Airspace Regulator to join the team at this exciting time of the UK airspace change programme.


The Role

You’ll perform a pivotal role in the team and will carry out the following:


  • Develop, establish and implement strategies and policies for the safe, orderly and expeditious operation of UK airspace, ensuring that such policies are in accordance with national and international regulations and safety management principles.
  • Provide regulatory and policy oversight of UK airspace management arrangements and provide aviation partners with advice, guidance and direction on airspace issues related to operations conducted inside and outside controlled airspace.
  • Lead and support a multidisciplinary team in the delivery of functional responsibilities. In doing so, you will be required to manage a team of Airspace Regulators that oversee the airspace change sponsors’ progression through the Airspace Change Process
  • Support and at time, deputise for the Manager of Airspace Regulation, fulfilling the role of head of section as required.


About You

Ideally, you’ll hold or have held an Air Traffic Controller (ATC) or aircrew background (civil/military), with extensive experience of Air Traffic Management (ATM) and specifically Air Traffic Control operations in UK airspace both en-route and terminal. Equivalent experience will be considered.


You must have sound interpersonal and communication skills as you’ll be required to establish personal credibility with technical specialists and develop constructive relationships. Your effective communication skills both written and oral will enable you to engage with partners at all levels throughout the CAA and externally.


You’ll have an innovative approach and be able to develop novel solutions, based on your sound knowledge and detailed understanding of ATM and aviation law principles. You’ll also have high levels of commitment, reliability and flexibility, while being a great teammate. You’ll need good time management and strong organisational skills to effectively lead a busy team, in a pressured environment, therefore previous line management experience is desirable.
