The Role


The Digital Communications Lead & Web Editor will drive the implementation of our Digital Communications work. The role holder will act as the Web Editor for the Civil Aviation Authority’s website, taking ownership to manage and optimise our online presence so that we can effectively position, promote, and protect the organisation.


The postholder will also oversee the day-to-day operations of team members, ensuring seamless support across both the Digital Communications & Campaigns team and wider Communications & Engagement Team. Influencing and collaborating with various departments will be key to ensuring coordinated, consistent, and accessible website content while horizon scanning for innovative features or technologies to enhance functionality and user experience. Utilising web analytics, the role holder will track and analyse website performance and implement content improvements.  Additionally, the postholder will deputise for the Head of Digital Communications and Campaigns, ensuring continuity and leadership within the team.


The role will need strong relationship building, negotiating, and influencing skills to work with the organisation to make sure we have accurate content and progress enhancements to the website, ensuring that it meets stakeholder’s needs.


The role can be based at either Aviation House - Gatwick or Westferry – Canary Wharf London but may need frequent travel to the other office. There will be an expectation that the role will be a visible presence for the team and wider organisation, for example working around three days a week in the office or visiting stakeholders.

Core Accountabilities


  • Act as the day-to-day digital focal point and champion in the Communications & Engagement Team.  Deputise for Head of Digital Communications & Campaigns as necessary.
  • Be the owner of our corporate website. Responsible for its ongoing management and content development to make sure it meets stakeholder requirements. 
  • Manage and oversee the day-to-day operations of Communication Coordinators who support the Digital Communications & Campaigns team.
  • Work with content owners in the wider organisation to make sure content is correct, coordinated, consistent and accessible, whilst also establishing / maintaining any necessary governance framework to facilitate this.
  • Work with colleagues in Information Services Department to make sure we are using the full capabilities of our systems and horizon scan for innovative features or technologies that could enhance the website's functionality and user experience.
  • Set up and run stakeholder engagement groups to feed back on the website and test future developments.
  • Manage the internal website development programme board.
  • Manage and create targeted digital content ensuring it is accurate, relevant, and aligned with organisational branding, priorities, and values.
  • Continually track and analyse website performance and user experience, working closely with the wider customer experience programme. Taking action to address any issues or take advantage of opportunities that these offers.
  • Support the wider Digital Communications & Campaigns team with decisions around content, brand, campaigns, and communications initiatives.
  • Act as a member of the wider Communications & Engagement Team’s on call out of hours system.


About You


The successful candidate will be able to display the following Technical Capabilities


Web Content Management:


  • Proficiency in using Content Management Systems (CMS) to manage and optimise website content.
  • Experience understanding best practice for accessibility and usability, ultimately providing effective customer journeys on our website.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address content-related challenges and optimise performance.
  • Significant experience overseeing a pipeline of upcoming website publications, consultations and website improvements.
  • Proficiency in using consultation platforms.




  • Knowledge of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) best practices to enhance website visibility and traffic.
  • Familiarity with digital marketing tools and strategies to support online campaigns and engagement.


Web Analytics:


  • Expertise in using web analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics) to monitor, track, and analyse website performance metrics.
  • Creating reports and providing insights to report back to internal stakeholders and inform strategic decisions and improvements.


Additional Information


For many appointments within the Civil Aviation Authority, these roles require access to operationally sensitive infrastructure and/or Nationally Protected information. For these roles the post holders must undergo National Security Vetting and achieve the appropriate level of clearance.
