Non-Executive Director - General Aviation

Apply now »

Date: 22-Jun-2022

Location: London, GB

Company: Civil Aviation Authority

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is a public corporation and the UK’s specialist independent aviation regulator. The CAA has specific responsibilities for aviation safety, security, management of UK airspace, economic regulation of some airports and air traffic control, spaceports and space launches, aviation innovation, remotely piloted aviation systems, enforcement of consumer protection rules, and the management of the ATOL financial protection scheme for holidaymakers.

The Opportunity

The Secretary of State is seeking to appoint one Non-Executive Director to join the Board of the CAA. The Secretary of State and the Aviation Minister are looking for an outstanding individual who can participate in setting the direction of a key transport regulator as the aviation sector recovers from the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic, and shaping the real-world experience of the multiple stakeholders the CAA serves. This is in the context of the CAA’s new responsibilities acquired with the UK’s departure from the European Aviation Safety Agency.

The Role

The role will provide independent and constructive challenge to the CAA’s executive team, ensuring the CAA delivers against its strategic objectives. We are looking for applicants with high level executive or non-executive Board experience and the ability to contribute effectively across the breadth of the CAA’s work. This specific role is for a person with expertise in the General Aviation sector (e.g. private, display, heritage, recreational, remotely piloted aircraft systems, and business aviation other than passenger carriage on scheduled flights). This role will not be one of representing or championing the General Aviation sector but rather the appointee will  bring their own understanding and experience to bear across the whole range of the CAA’s work.

This appointment is for a three-year term, with a time commitment of up to 60 days per year and a base salary of £25,000 per year. Non-Executive Directors may also be required to sit on panel hearings about safety or licensing matters, reimbursed at an additional day rate of £430.

The Candidate

You will have:

  • management experience and knowledge of effective governance at a senior level in complex organisations in the private, public or voluntary sectors, preferably at Board level.

You may have:

  • a background in one or more of professional or voluntary work in General Aviation.

  • excellent commercial business understanding.

However please note this is not intended to be a representational role on behalf of General Aviation and it may not be possible to hold it concurrently with some other General Aviation related roles. Further details are in the candidate pack and shortlisted applicants will be given the opportunity to explore potential conflicts of interest before interview.

We are particularly interested in candidates with a background in aviation, transport or central government.
