The Role
The Lithium Batteries Research Analyst supports the Lithium Batteries Project Manager in reducing lithium battery fire risks in aircraft cargo compartments through comprehensive research and safety data analysis. This role involves evaluating technical reports and studies on fire mitigation approaches, identifying strategy gaps, and recommending solutions to enhance aviation safety for presentation to senior management.
Reporting to the Lithium Batteries Project Manager, the analyst will collaborate with the Dangerous Goods team, other CAA departments, regulatory bodies like DfT, and universities to advance fire prevention strategies within the dangerous goods supply chain. The successful candidate will follow guidance carefully, adapt to changing circumstances, work effectively as part of a team, and complete tasks with accuracy and attention to detail.
Core Accountabilities
Key activities include:
- Data collection and analysis – Gather and analyse qualitative and quantitative data from various sources to conduct a gap analysis on lithium battery risk mitigation.
- Market and Industry Research – Conduct research on industry and State approaches, to support strategic decision making.
- Report writing and presentation – you will need to be able to prepare detailed reports to record your research and present conclusions and recommendations to senior managers and other Stakeholders in an easy to comprehend manner.
- Organisation and collaboration – work with internal teams and external partners to provide research-based recommendations. The post holder will be required to undertake cross CAA communication and coordinate the input of internal contributions into the projects workstreams.
- Records management – Ensure that key items of research and gap analysis are documented and recorded.
About You
Minimum essential requirements for the role:
- Knowledge of research methodologies and proficiency in PowerPoint presentations, excel.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to influence at all levels of business.
- Be experienced in defining and presenting solution options.
- The ability to engage and work with relevant technical teams to understand the solution and adherence to requirements.
- Hold strong stakeholder skills and the ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical staff within the business.
- Have a high logic capability allied to a very good problem-solving ability.
- Ensure a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- This role requires the ability to follow instructions and work under supervision, with a willingness to learn and develop new skills while meeting assigned deadlines.
Desirable skills for the role:
- Our preferred candidate would have an engineering background (aeronautical/manufacturing engineering degree, supply chain or aviation management or equivalent level of industry experience.
- Additional technical knowledge of subject matter areas like cargo handling, supply chain, aviation safety, lithium batteries or dangerous goods would be advantageous but not essential.

For many appointments within the CAA, these roles require access to operationally sensitive infrastructure and/or Nationally Protected information. For these roles the post holders must undergo National Security Vetting and achieve the appropriate level of clearance.

Relocation & Property
The CAA will be relocating from Aviation House (Our Gatwick Office) to new premises in a few years’ time. Our move is driven by strategic, operational and environmental considerations.
We will be moving to a new local home, up to a 15-mile radius of Aviation House, to minimise disruption for our valued colleagues and customers.
We are now working with colleagues and visitors to understand what we need in our new office, before we start our property search. We will sell Aviation House and land, vacate the site and move to new premises, but we do not expect to move before 2028
