The Role

To analyse aircraft noise and other environmental data using modelling systems and analytical tools to support the development of government policy, and to inform internal and external stakeholders on aviation noise and environmental management

Core Accountabilities

• Support CAA’s contribution to ICAO technical groups (e.g. ICAO CAEP WG1 noise certification), including building familiarity with the incumbent representatives’ role and associated work programmes
• Apply aerospace, aircraft performance and acoustics principles to support the development and review of ERCD’s noise and fuel-burn modelling tools, analytical methods, and technical systems, including their documentation and quality assurance, plus the integration of underlying aircraft performance inputs
• Work with large aviation datasets and modelling systems to analyse aircraft operations, their performance and associated environmental impacts, particularly aircraft noise
• Produce written and numerical outputs, according to the CAA’s brand and drafting guidance
• Engage with colleagues across the UK CAA outside ERCD as necessary, and with group-wide and organisation-wide activities and initiatives
• Undertake project work overseen by any other member of the team, though principally by project managers.
• Contribute to departmental decision-making and to work both as part of a team and autonomously as necessary.
• Propose analytical approaches to deliver project work.

About You

Essential Criteria

• Educated in Aerospace Engineering or equivalent experience with strong quantitative skills, including mathematics and physics relevant to engineering analysis.
• Analytical and data management skills, including experience of using Python, Microsoft Excel and database tools are essential; experience of using C# would be desirable
• Ability to develop clear and logically structured analytical code and to document analytical methods and outputs to support quality assurance and reproducibility.
• Ability to learn new analytical tools, modelling systems, and technical data formats.
• Understanding of aircraft performance modelling concepts (e.g. thrust, drag, flight profiles), basic acoustics principles and an interest in aircraft environmental modelling
• Able to accurately product written and numerical reports.
• Experience working with large, complex datasets, particularly for analytical or modelling purposes
• Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including interpretation of numerical outputs
• Proven ability to solve problems and to add value to large datasets by integrating and manipulating data from different sources
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and clarity
• Commitment to quality assurance, transparency, and good analytical practice
• Able to contribute to project‑based work, following direction from project managers
• Proven ability to work effectively as part of a team, including multidisciplinary teams
• Ability to work autonomously, managing own tasks and priorities
• Understanding of modelling assumptions, limitations, and uncertainty
• Ability to propose and justify analytical approaches to deliver project objectives
• Effective communication skills for engaging with colleagues across an organisation

Desirable Criteria

• Knowledge of aviation environmental policy and management.
• Have experience of working on technical or analytical projects, either through employment, research or academic work.
• Direct experience in aircraft noise modelling, including noise exposure contours
• Knowledge of aerospace acoustics or environmental noise assessment methodologies
• Experience developing, improving, or maintaining analytical or modelling tools
• Experience with quality assurance frameworks for analytical systems
• Familiarity with version control, technical documentation standards, or model governance
• Experience contributing to the development of analytical standards or best practice

Please note: this role will require travel to provide advisory services and participate in meetings and forums. This may include both domestic and international travel. Most travel is expected to involve attending international technical meetings with organisations such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC), and the SAE A-21 aircraft noise standards committee, as well as meetings with the UK Department for Transport and community groups as required.

Relocation & Property: The CAA will be relocating from Aviation House (Our Gatwick Office) to new premises in a few years’ time. Our move is driven by strategic, operational, and environmental considerations. We will be moving to a new local home, up to a 15-mile radius of Aviation House, to minimise disruption for our valued colleagues and customers. We are now working with colleagues and visitors to understand what we need in our new office before we start our property search. We will sell Aviation House and land, vacate the site, and move to new premises, but we do not expect to move before 2028
