The Role
You will co-manage and lead a team optimising their productivity, quality and delivery whilst also having the capability to co-lead the Dangerous Goods specialisation in accordance with the Flight Operations business plan.
One of two, the Inspecting Officer Lead – Dangerous Goods will be required to ensure Flight Operations colleagues who carry out oversight are operating in a safe and competent manner in compliance with relevant legislation and requirements, that a consistent performance-based oversight approach is applied, which contributes to maintaining aviation safety.
Core Accountabilities
- Assist management in delivering objectives while upholding standards
- Provide advice, mentoring and coaching to team members
- Develop oversight plans and support non-compliance management
- Delivery, development and governance of the oversight or standardisation plan for dangerous goods
- Support training development and delivery of training
- Process exemption or approval requests
- Identify potential enforcement issues and support investigations
- Apply outcome-focused oversight considering compliance and safety
- Share information for informed decision-making
- Ensure team competency, effective communication, and setting of clear objectives
- Facilitate team self-management while following company guidelines
About You
Minimum essential requirements for the role:
- Team Management experience.
- Ability to evaluate and analyse Management Information and remain flexible in approach.
- Deep and sound skills and experience in the regulatory environment, including compliance monitoring and safety management systems, Performance Based Oversight, audit and assessment techniques.
- Aviation related degree or professional level qualification and/or experience of working in the aviation industry or regulatory environment.
- Experience in the transport of dangerous goods.
- Excellent set of interpersonal skills suitable and appropriate to work as part of a team and to respond quickly, but calmly and correctly, when sudden needs arise.
- Able to confidently collaborate and influence with authority.
- Can prioritise and organise in a fluid and varied environment but with the ability to exercise initiative in planning for results.
- Confident and robust decision-maker, demonstrating initiative and confidence to seek guidance and approval of colleagues.
Desirable Criteria:
- Technical knowledge and expertise in the transport of Dangerous Goods by air
- Familiarity with IT packages used in CAA is desirable such as Q-Pulse and BYD.
Additional Information
For many appointments within the CAA, these roles require access to operationally sensitive infrastructure and/or Nationally Protected information. For these roles the post holders must undergo National Security Vetting and achieve the appropriate level of clearance.
CTC - To be vetted we will usually expect a reasonable period of residency in the UK so that meaningful checks can be undertaken. For this role this will need to be 3 years.

Relocation & Property
The CAA will be relocating from Aviation House (Our Gatwick Office) to new premises in a few years’ time. Our move is driven by strategic, operational and environmental considerations.
We will be moving to a new local home, up to a 15-mile radius of Aviation House, to minimise disruption for our valued colleagues and customers.
We are now working with colleagues and visitors to understand what we need in our new office, before we start our property search. We will sell Aviation House and land, vacate the site and move to new premises, but we do not expect to move before 2028
