Date: 08-Jan-2021

Location: Area Based, GB

Company: Civil Aviation Authority

Salary: Up to £65,000 dependant upon experience

Contract type: Permanent

The CAA is the UK's independent aviation safety regulator. Recognised as a world leader in our field, we are at the cutting edge of the exciting and ever-changing aviation environment. Within the Authority, the General Aviation Unit (GAU) Continuing Airworthiness Team is responsible for the oversight of around 15,000 GA types (balloons, ex-military aircraft, gyrocopters, helicopters, light aircraft and sailplanes).  The team is also responsible for the oversight of approximately 300 approved organisations situated at 150 sites around the UK.

In addition, we are responsible for delivering the UK government’s General Aviation Strategy (CAP1754) and implementing recent GA specific rule changes, such as Part-ML, to promote the CAA’s vision that the UK should be a great place to fly with a flourishing GA sector

The Role

We are currently recruiting for an Airworthiness Surveyor to carry out the Performance Based Regulatory Oversight of GA Aircraft, approved maintenance and continued airworthiness organisations and individuals. You will deliver outcome focussed oversight that applies Performance Based Oversight principles and meets statutory compliance obligations.

You will collaborate and work flexibly to support the work of colleagues within the CAA.

You will build relationships with and influence Industry Accountable Managers, Senior Post Holders and individual stakeholders to continually improve safety performance, risk and compliance.

You’ll work widely across industry as regulatory engagement will be required to ensure that the CAA keeps appraised of future projects, innovation technologies and proposed regulatory changes.

You will need to be able to regularly travel across the UK and occasionally overseas.

About you

  • You will hold an Part-66 or BCAR License endorsed for GA aircraft, a HNC, HND, an appropriate engineering degree or have extensive equivalent industry experience in the Part-M/Part-ML maintenance environment.
  • We are looking for a good communicator with the ability to evaluate, analyse and ensure compliance against safety objectives whilst remaining flexible and proportional in your approach.
  • You need a good knowledge of regulatory rules coupled with personal attributes to engage and be influential within the CAA and with industry. Given the level of influencing and negotiation that the role requires, continuing airworthiness management experience would be a distinct advantage.
  • You should be familiar with regulatory requirements such as the Air Navigation Order, BCARs, Part-21 Regulations and guidance material.
  • Your experience of Quality Management Systems will be matched by a good grasp of IT and Safety Management Systems used within aviation.
