The Role

An opportunity has arisen for   an aircraft Design Certification Surveyor to join our Airworthiness team in the General Aviation Unit of the CAA. As a Design Certification Surveyor you will have a leading role in the safety regulation and oversight of the UK’s General Aviation (GA) industry and aircraft fleet. You will enjoy a varied and meaningful portfolio of work, including:

Design/certification submission review work for a wide range of GA aircraft, including ex-military aeroplanes and helicopters, Microlights, light aeroplanes, light rotorcraft (helicopters and gyroplanes) and balloons, covering all aeronautical engineering disciplines.

 

Responsibility for the oversight of GA aircraft design and production organisations.

 

Investigation of in-service incidents relevant to GA types and taking mandatory action where appropriate.

 

There are also opportunities to participate in a variety of change projects and to help us shape the future of General Aviation safety regulation in the UK. This role is dynamic, diverse, challenging and rewarding.  

 

Note: An element of on-the-job and/or external developmental training is expected to be provided by us for what is a notably broad technical remit.  In this regard we will be happy to consider not just experienced design staff, but recent graduates or even those currently studying in a related discipline. 

 

About You

To apply to this position you must:

  • Have (or be currently studying for) a Degree or equivalent standard in Aeronautical Engineering, or other relevant engineering or airworthiness discipline.
  • Be able to exercise sound, but flexible & pragmatic engineering judgement when presented with new challenges.
  • Be comfortable communicating and able to develop constructive relationships across all levels throughout the CAA and externally
  • Be motivated, enthusiastic and a teammate.
  • Possess a UK or internationally recognised driving licence.

 

Desirable attributes:

  • Practical GA design engineering and/or flying experience.
  • Direct experience of specialisms such as flight testing, structures, systems engineering and certification management.
  • Knowledge of safety and risk management tools and techniques.
  • Sound time management and organisation skills.
  • Experience in regulatory compliance and/or product certification.
  • A working knowledge of EASA and/or UK National aircraft design, production and certification requirements (e.g. Part-21, BCAR A8-21/A8-9, CS-23/27/22/31/VLA/VLR, BCAR Section S&T)
