The Role

We have an exciting opportunity for an Information Rights Specialist to join our growing Communications team. Working as part of a team responsible for external information services to the public and stakeholders. This role is fundamental in the running of the CAA’s Freedom of Information Act (FOI), Environmental Information Regulations (EIR) and Data Subject Access Requests.

This is a varied role where you’ll act as the subject matter expert being involved in processing requests, assessing information inputs, collaborating with colleagues across the CAA and writing considered responses. The postholder will be the key point of contact for providing training and support of other CAA staff involved in FOI, EIR & DPA cases.

Depending on your entry level of experience, your training and progress towards a qualification and becoming the CAA’s main focal point on information rights will be staggered over time in order to:


  • Lead on information rights activities and shape information sharing and transparency practices
  • Provide guidance on use of exemptions and public interest factors, formulating robust responses that should hold up to scrutiny by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO)
  • Independently drafts FOI/EIR responses to reflect both CAA policy, ICO guidance and recent ICO decisions.
  • Supports IR dispute resolution processes and strategies finding ways to minimise risks of case escalation to the ICO.
  • Leads internal reviews and ICO enquiries or complaints as requested by Head of External Information Services.
  • Prioritise the gathering of material requested working closely with the Data Protection Manager to decide upon disclosures and redacts such material appropriately.
  • Work collaboratively with members of the communications and legal teams on sophisticated, high profile, or media-related cases.


About You

Although we are seeking a person with previous experience and knowledge of the Freedom of Information Act, Environmental Information Regulations & Data Protection Act, we are widening our recruitment to invite people with a proven background in handling sophisticated casework and who have strong analytical and organisation skills who have experience of dealing with the public, industry stakeholders and complainants. This role will involve drafting letters and short reports, so we are keen to hear from individuals with experience of communicating confidently at all levels, both accurately and concisely, and who are self-motivated and great at building relationships.

Additional Information

Given the impact of Covid-19, it’s likely that you will work remotely to begin with as we plan for a return to work within the government guidelines. Our wider communications team are usually based both in London and Gatwick offices with the team you will directly be working with based at Gatwick, so there will be opportunities to work remotely and in between offices as needed.
