The Role


The Civil Aviation Authority has a broad directive to ensure that safety is prioritised in aviation. This is achieved through the development and implementation of effective and well-developed regulations. One of our key subject matter areas in this regard is Flight Operations. To make sure that our consumers and people on the ground are best protected, we must continuously maintain and develop our Flight Operations Safety Strategy. To this end, we are looking for an aviation safety professional with a passion for enhancing safety performance and advancing our regulatory understanding in the field of human factors to tackle the role of Safety Improvement Specialist with the Authority.


As a Safety Improvement Specialist, you will work with both internal and external partners to support, promote and improve our Safety Management Systems (SMS) within Flight Operations. You will also play a pivotal role in the identification of future and existing safety issues, the understanding of their impacts and the development of regulations that address any concerns. This is done through the effective engagement and consultation of key partners from not only within the CAA itself but also the wider aviation industry, government, and academia.


Operationally you will produce regular reports for Flight Operations senior leadership team considering all aspects of an integrated management systems, take the lead on standardisation activity and best practise sharing, provide assistance for the assessment of safety investigations and make recommendations on their future prevention and improvement. As well as this, you will be empowered to grow your knowledge of, and network in, safety management. To ensure that the CAA is best placed to deal with emerging safety challenges and concerns, you will deliver multiple operational safety improvement projects and much more.


This is a phenomenal role for someone with practical safety management experience in a flight operations context, who is looking for an opportunity to truly contribute to the safety of the entire aviation industry. About You


  • Experience in an operational safety management and change management environment (preferably in an aviation field)
  • Excellent international knowledge of and connection to global aviation developments especially in the area of human and safety performance.
  • Ability to ensure that all advice offered, and recommendations made, aligns with the relevant international standards and best practices.
  • Ability to identify and manage the business and safety risks to Flight Operations at a strategic and operational level.
  • Confident manner in dealing with/influencing people at all levels of seniority and ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality.
  • Excellent understanding of safety systems and processes such as those applied by the CAA.
  • Creative problem solver with energy and the ability to get to the root causes of operational / safety problems and to work with a range of partners to identify and implement solutions.
  • Ability to look beyond existing methodologies and their own subject area to define and resolve complex problems.
  • Ability and experience to identify and realise an opportunity for improvement.
  • Proven track record of engaging with cross departmental teams.
  • A great teammate with a can-do attitude
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral)
  • Advanced level skills using Microsoft office products and able to interpret and analyses safety plans and oversight delivery.
  • Business awareness - Understanding of CAA regulatory remit, their functions, our organisation, structure and culture.
  • Must be able to travel unrestricted within the UK.


Additional Information

For many appointments within the CAA, these roles require access to operationally sensitive infrastructure and/or Nationally Protected information. For these roles the post holders must undergo National Security Vetting and achieve the appropriate level of clearance.


To be vetted we will usually expect a reasonable period of residency in the UK so that relevant checks can be undertaken.
